This holiday season there are a lot of ways families and Scouts can give back. From writing thank you cards to first responders to raking leaves from an elderly neighbor’s yard, we’ve seen our Scouts try to make their communities a better place. But one of our Scouts went above and beyond.
Billy L. from Pack 3348 has created his own challenge dubbed #BillysHeroes. His goal was to recognize essential workers, first responders, and others who he looks up to across Kansas City. The rules for the challenge were simple: for every $35 Billy sold in his popcorn fundraiser he would donate a Chiefs Super Bowl Champion popcorn tin to one of these local heroes.
Billy donated Chiefs Tins to 18 Firefighters and Paramedics from 12 Fire Stations in eight Fire Districts including Overland Park, Leawood, Shawnee, Olathe, Leavenworth, Kansas City Fire and the Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No.2.
He delivered Chiefs Tins to seven police officers from Prairie Village, Overland Park, Mission, Leawood, Shawnee, Lenexa, and the Kansas City Police Department.
Billy gave Chiefs Tins to five nurses at two hospitals, a doctor’s office, and a school nurse. He donated tins to four long-term health care providers. Billy gave two teachers Chiefs Tins. He gave tins to two veterans and one active-duty military member. Billy gave a tin to a pair of siblings of a differently abled brother and he gave a tin to a child battling brain cancer.
In case you’ve lost count, Billy donated 41 Chiefs Tins in 10 different cities on both sides of the state line. He and his sister spent their free time visiting these heroes and thanking them for what they do.
On top of donating Chiefs Tins, Billy is also donating 10% of his own money from the popcorn sales he makes to Harvesters Food Bank.
In a year that has been difficult to say the least, Billy is teaching us an important lesson: spreading a little kindness, and some popcorn, can go a long way.
