Summer is officially HERE! While this means the return to summer camp, it also means that Kansas City has a ton to offer Scouts and the entire family! We've compiled ten of our favorite Summer Scouting activities in KC!


The Kansas City Zoo
We must admit… we are incredibly biased. We like penguins and we like sea lions. The Kansas City Zoo is the only place in KC that has both… they are top on this list. With daily educational chats and shows and even Scout workshops, there’s an entire day of fun to be had at the zoo. Why not let your pack run wild?

The Nelson-Atkins Museum
Kansas City is absolutely spoiled when it comes to art. Not only does the Nelson-Atkins have some incredible exhibits, but it’s also completely FREE to attend! Bring your Scouts and enjoy a day the museum! The best part? You can do this activity regardless of weather!

The Steamboat Arabia Museum
Located in the River Market, this one-of-a-kind museum is a window into America’s frontier. In 1856 the Arabia and her treasures sunk on the Missouri river, later to be dug out of a Kansas cornfield. Your pack can see everything from fine China and carpentry tools to children’s toys and the world’s oldest pickles.

Shatto Milk Company
Milk every drop out of your summer and mooo-ve on up to Osborn, Missouri and experience Kansas City’s milk company. Get a tour of the processing plant, see the bottling process including how they prep bottles for re-use, milk a cow and meet some adorable calves.

Ernie Miller Park & Nature Center
If you say KC has nothing to do in the summer you can take a hike…literally. Located in Johnson County, the Ernie Miller Park & Nature Center is a perfect way to explore a diverse range of habitats such as tallgrass prairie, upland meadows, bottomland forest and a beautiful stream. You can also learn all about the animals you might see at the nature center.

James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area
If you’re fishing for some summer fun look no further than the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area. With 12 lakes stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, bluegill, green sunfish, redear sunfish and bullheads once you visit you and your Scouts will be hooked.

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) is the world’s only museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of African-American baseball and its impact on the social advancement of America. Bring your Scouts to learn about the  obstacles players of color faced and how their talent, passion and perseverance changed Major League Baseball and America.

With summer finally here, and the Powell Gardens has plenty of beautiful plants to admire. With a three-mile hike and seven unique gardens to explore, you and your Scouts can spend a summer day enjoying this educational experience.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Kansas City Community Gardens. If you want your Scouts to learn how to grow their veggies, tend a garden and help their community the KCCG has programs specifically designed for Scouts all summer long!
