For Gyan Malani, earning the rank of Eagle Scout was never just about wearing a badge—it was the spark that shaped his entire life’s purpose. Growing up in Beaumont, TX, Scouting taught him early on that true leadership is rooted in service: showing up for others, strengthening local communities, and using your personal strengths to make a meaningful difference.
Today, as a medical student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine and a researcher with the Plastic Surgery Research Team at Children’s Mercy Hospital, the core principles in the Scout Oath and Law continue to shape his vision for both healthcare and civic engagement.
“Becoming an Eagle Scout has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” Gyan shared. “Scouting taught me that leadership is all about giving back, and that lesson continues to shape who I am today.”
Now, Gyan is connecting his Scouting foundation with his passion for medicine as the Student National Fundraising Chair for the 100 Cleft Portraits Tour. Created by artist and advocate Katie Manning, the national exhibition works to humanize, empower, and celebrate individuals born with cleft lip and palate.
“More than an art exhibition, the tour is a movement that helps people see beyond a diagnosis and recognize the beauty, humanity, and individuality of those affected,” said Gyan. “As an Eagle Scout, it’s incredibly meaningful to help bring communities together around a cause that reminds us every person's story matters.”
The 100 Cleft Portraits Tour is coming to Kansas City on Sunday, August 23 at Wonderscope - Children's Museum of Kansas City. Local Scouts also have a unique chance to get involved and to volunteer. Gyan hopes local Scouting families will step up to support the event, whether by volunteering or attending to learn more about advocacy.
“I want to open this up to all Scouts—either to volunteer or simply learn that even small acts of service can help create a kinder, more understanding world.”
