The Campmaster Corps began in the Heart of America Council in 1971 at Camp Powell of the Kansas City Area Council. The HOAC Campmaster Corps is comprised of dedicated Scouters volunteering to help the Camp Ranger by providing assistance to the guests of the reservation, supporting program, or by performing maintenance projects while living by the Scout Oath and Law.

Campmasters may volunteer to serve in one of 3 ways:

  • 1 - On a weekend host team
  • 2 - On a weekend maintenance team
  • 3 - As an individual at a Council workday

The weekend teams serve between August and May. Campmasters select their own time and frequency of service. They serve a minimum of two times a year on specific prearranged dates.

Campmaster Service Calendar

Campmaster teams sign up at the annual dinner for which weekends they will work for the next year.  Those sign-ups plus the events scheduled at each camp are shown on the Campmaster calendar by weekend.  The Campmaster calendar also shows holidays and other times when camp may be closed.  A copy of the Campmaster calendar is posted at each camp in the camp offices and at the link below.

2018 Campmaster Team Calendar

Each year hundreds of volunteers from across the Heart of America Council donate their time and talents to the operations of the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation and H Roe Bartle Scout Reservation by serving as part of the Campmaster Corps.

Campmaster Trainings

Campmasters must maintain their training by completing HOAC training every two years.  There are two ways to complete this training: attend the annual training event or complete the training online.

Online training is available.  Review the Campmaster Handbook, then successfully complete the online test to satisfy the training expectation.  Successful completion is considered 75% correct on the test.  Insert your name at the test login and use "Campmaster" as the passcode to begin your test session.
Click here to access the online test.      Click here to download the Campmaster Handbook.

Council Campmaster Training

The Heart of America Council Campmaster Training is at the Carpenter's Union Hall on March 24, 2018. This training includes equipment, Campmaster responsibilities, emergency procedures, tools and RTV's/carts. All registered Heart of America Council members who will be driving an RTV or cart for the council, at camp or elsewhere, will need to attend and be trained.

Chainsaw Training

The Heart of America Council is blessed to have two great reservations totaling more than 5000 acres. The maintenance and upkeep of these reservations takes a dedicated group of volunteers and professionals. Per BSA national standards, each chainsaw operator must have completed BSA approved training to be able to operate a chainsaw saw on the reservation. Chainsaw training allows Scouters to join the team of sawyers that performs the tree trimming and tree removal work that is required at our reservations. Our chainsaw training covers safe practices for handling these potentially dangerous tools.

The 2018 Naish chainsaw training is on March 10, 2018.

Click on the appropriate link to register for the training you'd like to attend.

How do I join the Campmaster team?

Are you interested in being a Campmaster?

Campmaster volunteers must maintain a current Campmaster application on file with the Heart of America Council.  If you need to complete a Campmaster application you can do so by submitting it online at http://www.hoac-bsa.org/campmaster-application. Once completed you will be contacted by one of the Campmaster Team members.

Maintenance Team Award Recipients

Without your efforts and hard work throughout the years, we would not have two great camps to deliver our quality programs to the Scouts of our Council. The highlight of each year is the awarding of the "Volunteers of the Year" and "Lifetime Achievement Awards". Congratulations to past recipients.
