Post Biography Profiles:
University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry – The School of Dentistry’s Dental Research Explorer Post 2947 consists of 15-20 area high school students. A couple travel distances as far as St. Louis, Missouri. The age range is from 14-19. The goal is to educate aspiring high school students about the field of dentistry and to provide them with related and invaluable hands-on-lab experience. High school students from the Kansas City, Missouri and the surrounding area are eligible to participate in the program. Students should have an interest in the dental field and be academically sound.
The Post is facilitated by a dental faculty advisor and complimented by dental students who are members of the Student National Dental Association/Hispanic Student Dental Association (dental chapters.) The Dental Research Explorer Post has been in existence for more than 30 years. The Post holds meetings monthly on Saturday mornings from 10:00 a.m-12:00 noon at the Dental School is located at 650 E. 25t h Street, Kansas City, Missouri. The post dedicates each month to a different dental specialty area or research project. Meetings include a presentation from dental school faculty and alumni. This segment typically last one hour. Thereafter, for an additional hour, participants are engaged in hands-on lab activities under the direction and supervision of Student National Dental Association/ Hispanic Student Dental Association
UMKC School of Dentistry Dental Research Explorer Post has hosted speakers in the areas of General Dentistry, Oral Maxillofacial Prosthetics, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontic, Forensic Dentistry, Public Health and many other specialty areas. Participants are afforded the opportunity to tour and shadow dental students on the dental clinic. In the past year, the Dental School in collaboration with the School of Medicine and Pharmacy respectively, have created a week long health science camp to which Dental Research Explorer Post members are encourage to apply.

Truman Medical Center Lakewood — (TMC) Lakewood, in Eastern Jackson County, invites area high school students to explore healthcare careers with Medical Explorer Post 2950. Meetings are held monthly October through May on Thursday evening, and feature in-depth study of a different area of healthcare. Students tour hospital departments and learn about the career options available to them. Hospital staff and healthcare providers share their experience, training, and job duties providing students first-hand knowledge of their day to day activities and responsibilities. Students often report that they learned about careers they didn’t know existed. Recent programs have featured our surgery center with students learning suturing techniques and pediatrics, which included a field trip to tour the neonatal unit at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Students have an opportunity to assume leadership roles in the Post, perform community service hours, or shadow an employee in a specific hospital department. Student leaders serve on the TMC Lakewood Medical Explorer Advisory Board and help plan programs, special activities, and run meetings
The Heart of America Council, BSA (Boy Scouts of America) awarded TMC Lakewood the 2001 Exploring Cluster Program of the Year in Healthcare. Student involvement was the key to this award. We are particularly proud of students who have been accepted into the UMKC (University of Missouri, Kansas City) School of Medicine and other healthcare programs at area colleges and universities.
